Bed Bug Identification

What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are pests that no one is comfortable having in their homes. One day with bed bugs as roommates is one day too many! Bed bugs are biting, pests that feed solely on the blood of warm-blooded animals; it just so happens that their favorite hosts are people. These nocturnal bugs like to hide during the day close to our sleeping areas, giving them easy access to their hosts when they emerge at night to feed.

These bugs are small, but they are easy to spot if you know what you are looking for. They have a flat oval-shaped body and are reddish-brown. These insects are wingless and have six legs. While bed bugs aren't social, they are prolific breeders and develop large populations once inside a structure.

Are bed bugs dangerous?

Bed bugs typically aren't considered dangerous as they don't pose huge health threats by spreading diseases. However, they do cause a variety of other issues.

  • Their presence in a house causes sleepless nights.

  • Bed bugs make it impossible to feel comfortable in your home.

  • Those allergic to bed bug saliva will develop a raised, red itchy rash.

  • Scratching at bite sites can lead to secondary infections.

  • Their presence can cause a musty, unpleasant odor.

Why do I have a bed bug problem?

Bed bugs are indoor pests, so their primary mode of transportation from home to home or business to business is by hitchhiking. They will crawl onto people or their belongings and move with them into new structures. Secondhand items like furniture, rugs, clothing, mattresses, and box springs also regularly transport bed bugs from place to place.

You can find bed bugs almost anywhere there are people, making Florida a place where these pests thrive. As people move in, out, and around Florida on a daily basis, they transport bed bugs with them.

Where will I find bed bugs?

Bed bugs are found in multiple areas of our homes, not just in bedrooms. They use their six legs to crawl to different areas of a structure, moving behind walls and under floors. Below are some of the places where bed bugs frequently hide in our Florida homes:

  • The seams of mattresses, box springs, and upholstered furniture

  • The cracks in wooden furniture like headboards and footboards

  • Behind wall hanging likes pictures or clocks

  • In cracks in walls or floor and behind baseboards

  • Behind wooden door or window trim

  • Under areas of clutter

In addition to our homes, you'll often find bed bugs in hotels, airports, amusement parks, resorts, hospitals, schools, shopping centers, and movie theaters.
