Rodent Identification

What are rodents?

Rodents are mammals that live in large numbers throughout the state of Florida. Mice and rats are the two most common species to invade our yards, homes, and businesses where they are always unwelcome because of the dangers they impose and the destruction they cause.

Mice are small rodents with oval-shaped bodies, triangular-shaped heads, and pointed noses. Their large ears stand up off the head, and the ears and tail have a light layer of smooth hair.

Adult rats are larger than adult mice. They have a more elongated body than mice, and their head is heavy and blunt. The rat’s ears are relatively small and sit flat against their head. They have a thick, scaly tail that is void of hair.

Both rats and mice are “commensal,” which means they want to share our table. Over time, they have learned the benefits of living with people and want to live with us. Their high populations make these pests difficult to prevent.

Are rodents dangerous?

The presence of rodents is not only annoying to deal with; they can cause damage inside homes and businesses, which leads to things like short circuits, fires, and water damage.

Both rats and mice can cause a lot of damage to the structures they invade with their sharp, chisel-like front teeth. Their front incisors grow continuously throughout their life, and they are constantly gnawing on things to prevent them from overgrowing. Their chewing habits cause damage to wires, pipes, siding, drywall, flooring, furniture, boxes, food packaging, and more.

Rodents aren’t considered dangerous just because of the destruction they cause but because of the many health concerns that they bring with them. Before finding a way into your structure, rodents lived outside, traveling through some unsanitary environments.

After moving into your home, rodents will contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria, pathogens, and disease-spreading parasites. Salmonella, rat-bite fever, murine typhus, hantavirus, and leptospirosis are all illnesses spread by rodents. Their shed fur and excrement can also trigger allergy symptoms and skin rashes in susceptible people.

Why do I have a rodent problem?

More often than not, our properties provide rodents with easy access to their basic needs, and these pests won’t hesitate to take advantage and move into our yard or home.

Rodents are a year-round problem in Florida; they can enter into our structures any time of the year. They often move indoors to create their nesting site in a safe, temperature-controlled environment or to forage for food.

Rodents have a high metabolism and are on a constant search for food. Temperature extremes like very hot or cool weather also cause these pests to want to seek out indoor shelter.

Where will I find rodents?

Hiding and nesting sites that rodents often utilize in our yards include tall grass, fallen trees, overgrown shrubs, gardens, and spaces under our decks, sheds, and foundations. They also like to live in and around garages, sheds, and pool houses. Rodents are prey animals and want to stay hidden from view as much as possible.

Being both shy and nocturnal means it can take some time for a home or business owner to realize that rodents have invaded their property. If you are noticing rodents moving around your Florida indoor or outdoor space during the day, it means that a large infestation has developed that requires immediate attention!

Basements, wall voids, attics, crawl spaces, and utility rooms are places where rodents like to nest after moving into our homes. Some of their favorite nesting spots include:

  • The inside of boxes or clutter.

  • Under or within upholstered furniture.

  • In the backs of cabinets or cupboards.

  • Behind large appliances.

  • In closets, pantries, or linen closets.
