Wildlife Identification

What is wildlife?

More often than not, wild animals cause no problems and are enjoyable for us to watch from afar in their natural habitats. However, when certain species of wildlife decide to make themselves at homes in our yards or sometimes inside of our homes and outbuildings, they lose their natural charm and become problematic pests that often pose a threat to our properties, families, and pets.

Some of the most problematic wildlife that property owners have to contend with in our region of Florida include:

  • Bats

  • Squirrels

  • Raccoons

  • Moles

  • Armadillos

  • Skunks

  • Opossums

Are wildlife dangerous?

Wild animals are dangerous and damaging pests that have no concern for your health, your home’s structure, or your personal belongings.

  • Wild animals can carry and spread many diseases through their saliva, urine, and feces.

  • These animals are not our pets, and no matter how small or cute they may be, if they feel threatened, they will protect themselves by biting, scratching, hissing, or spitting.

  • Some wildlife will tear through things like screens, vents, siding, weatherstripping, and roof shingles to gain access to your home.

  • When nesting inside your house, wild animals will chew or tear through things like wires, cables, insulation, drywall, and flooring, causing costly damage.

  • Wild animals cause damage in our yards; they will dig through gardens, lawns, and trash cans, searching for food. They can also cause harm to trees, foundations, and cement slabs by digging around them or burrowing underneath them.

Why do I have a wildlife problem?

Warmth, sun, and rain are plentiful in Florida and are all things that allow a wide variety of wild animals to thrive. As people have taken over more land and the natural habitats of wild animals, they have had to adapt to living near people.

Over time, wild animals have learned that our properties will provide them with the things they need to survive. The biggest attractant for any animal or unwanted pest is food. If your property offers wildlife easy access to food sources, they won’t hesitate to take advantage.

Things found in many of our yards that are providing wild animals with food include:

  • Trash cans

  • Compost bins

  • Gardens and fruit trees

  • Pet food

  • Bird feeders

  • Standing water

  • Backyard chickens

Where will I find wildlife?

Problems with wildlife can occur on any property, whether your home is in a rural environment or a more urban area; these animals have adapted to living where we live.

Wild animals, when living outside, prefer to live in areas that provide them with a lot of protection from the elements and other predatory animals. They often live in locations with many trees, dense vegetation, and close to natural water sources.

In our yards, items like construction materials, play structures, decks, sheds, and yard debris make the perfect places for wild animals to live.

Some wild animals will also decide to make your house their home. When they do, chimneys, attics, and wall voids are their most common nesting or roosting sites.
